The Center for Democracy has undertaken a number of programs to assist the emerging democracies of Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States (NIS). With foundation, corporate, and government sponsorship, the Center since 1985 has organized a series of conferences and informal dialogues designed to encourage exchange among parliamentarians, government officials, jurists, and other leaders from Europe, the NIS, and North America on key issues related to the democratization process. Many of these activities over the past decade have enjoyed the support and participation of the Council of Europe and its Parliamentary Assembly, the Strasbourg Conferences on Parliamentary Democracy, and the European Parliament, with which the Center has maintained close and cooperative relationships.
