Members of the Center sponsored observer delegation to the 1996 general elections in Nicaragua |
The Center for Democracy has led a number of democracy-strengthening activities in the Americas, working with political forces across ideological lines in times of conflict and in peace. In its early years, the Center dedicated itself to building networks of democratic leaders in Latin America. Over time and with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, it perfected a model framework of technical assistance for strengthening the new democratically-elected national legislatures. At critical moments, the Center also has engaged in highly effective election monitoring. Its work to support a peaceful and democratic outcome to the civil conflicts in El Salvador and Nicaragua contributed to the award of a United Nations Peace Medal to Center President Allen Weinstein.
