[WASHINGTON, DC] New Democracies Forum. A multi-party delegation of members from the Turkish Grand National Assembly visited Washington for meetings with Members of the U.S. Congress; officials of the National Security Council; Departments of State, Defense, Treasury, and Commerce; International Monetary Fund; and non-governmental organizations active in Turkish-American relations.

[WASHINGTON, DC] International Judicial Conference. Eleventh annual meeting of justices form the highest national courts in 70 countries worldwide, including the U.S. Supreme Court. Focus of the conference was the international judicial response to terrorism and corruption, as well as a continuing theme of ensuring judicial independence and the rule of law. The conference was sponsored by the Center, the Furth Family Foundation, and IFES. See List of Participants and Conference Agenda.

Publication: The Democracy and Peace Paper

The inaugural issue of Democracy and Peace is now available. In three languages (Arabic, English, Hebrew), the paper contains all the major operable proposals for an end to violence in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. It also includes a joint editorial from the editors of Northern Ireland's leading Protestant and Catholic newspapers. Future issues will deal with the following topics: The Challenges of Democracy: Israel and Palestine; The Palestinian Elections; Rule of Law Questions: Israel and Palestine; and The Economic Dimension of Mideast Peace.

Allen Weinstein, joined by representatives from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and other Americans, participated in a conference in Taipei, Taiwan on "Asia-Pacific Democratic Cooperation" (August 25-27, 2002). Topics covered included: democratization in Asia, democracy and regional security, the role of NGOs, and building cooperative frameworks to consolidate democratization in Taiwan and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region.

At the conference, the international participants offered suggestions for developing mechanisms for further regional democratic expansion and, also, for possible creation of a Taiwan democracy foundation. After the conference, President Chen Shui-bian met with international delegates for a lively off-the-record discussion of current issues affecting Taiwan.

[BELFAST] Allen Weinstein delivered the graduation address at the Belfast Institute for Further & Higher Education and held meetings with Northern Ireland Assembly leaders.
